Red Kuri kabocha

Red Kuri kabocha – Curcubita maxima Duchesne ssp. maxima cv. maxima ‘Red Hokkaido’

This is another tasty Japanese heritage squash or pumpkin that I’m growing. Sometimes it’s also called Baby Hubbard or Potimarron squash. Like most squash it probably originally came from the Americas but this is one is associated with Hokkaido in Japan.

Regardless of where it’s originally from – it’s a small, beautiful and tasty vegetable with a chestnut flavour overtone and comes in many colour variations.

It grows best when left to ramble along a fence or raised structure.
